What is Search Engine Crawling?

Crawling is simply the discovery process in where search engines send out a team of robots to find new and updated content. These robots also go by the name of crawlers or spiders. These robots are necessary because the content on websites can vary. Now, the content can be a webpage, an image, a video, or even a PDF. However, regardless of the format, content is discovered by links. Which leads to the importance of backlinks for SEO purposes.

Crawling: Can Search Engines Find Your Pages?

Making sure your site gets crawled and indexed is a prerequisite to showing up in the SERPs. When we begin a new SEO campaign at MSEDP, we start off by checking to see how many pages are indexed and set up your website with some tools to help with the process. This includes a connection with Google Search Console, which is instrumental in monitoring the indexing and crawling of websites. This tool yields some great insights into whether Google is crawling and finding all the pages you want it to, and none that you do not. On top of that, we are able to submit sitemaps and monitor various aspects of your website. If you have a WordPress website, we can also use the tools set up there as well. Further ensuring proper indexing and crawling.

5 Reasons Why You Might Not Be Showing Up In Search Results

If you have a website and you are not showing up in the results, there are a few possible reasons why that may be happening. Here are five reasons why your website may not be showing up properly.

  1. Website is brand new and has not been crawled yet.
  2. Your site contains some basic code called crawler directives that is blocking search engines.
  3. Current website is not linked to from any external websites.
  4. Navigation makes it hard for a robot to crawl it effectively.
  5. Your site has been penalized by Google for spammy tactics.

When you turn to MSEDP, we will monitor all aspects of your website to ensure none of these issues arise.

Tell Search Engines How to Crawl Your Site

We use Google Search Conole and with this tool we can tell Google to crawl your website. We can also tell Google to crawl certain pages. This is a great way of making sure any updates or new pages are crawled sooner than later. Having this ability to tell search engines how to crawl your site can give you better control of what ends up in the index. At MSEDP, we will manage your website to the fullest extent to make sure that all aspects are covered properly.

About Robots.txt

Most people think about making sure Google can only find their important pages. However, it is easy to forget that there are likely pages you do not want Googlebot to find. These might include aspects such as old URLs that have thin content, duplicate URLs, such as sort-and-filter parameters for e-commerce, special promo code pages, staging or test pages, and so on. To direct Googlebot away from certain pages and sections of your site, we use robots.txt.

Robots.txt files are located in the root directory of websites and suggest which parts of your site search engines should and shouldn't crawl. It also impacts the speed at which they crawl your site, via specific robots.txt directives.

How Googlebot Treats robots.txt Files

Here are three ways robots.txt is treated by Googlebot.

  1. If Googlebot cannot find a robots.txt file for a site, it proceeds to crawl the site.
  2. When Googlebot finds a robots.txt file for a site, it will usually abide by the suggestions and crawl the site accordingly.
  3. If Googlebot encounters an error while trying to access a site’s robots.txt file and cannot determine if one exists or not, it will not crawl the site.

Having your robots.txt file in order is crucial in keeping your website running properly. Turn to MSEDP for full-scale SEO services.
